United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer discusses the role of the Court in American government and explains why he believes the justices should interpret the Constitution in a way that works in practice as well as in theory. Breyer rejects approaches that look exclusively at the Constitution’s text or the 18th century views of the framers and instead advocates a pragmatic approach that applies unchanging constitutional values to ever-changing circumstances. Due to the overwhelming interest in this event, we are anticipating the Library parking garage will reach capacity.
Our good friends at UMB Bank have agreed to make overflow parking available in the UMB Bank parking garage (49th Street, west of the bank building) and at the UMB Bank surface lot (50th Street, south of the bank building). Library staff will be on hand at both the Library and the UMB Bank building, as well as at the intersection of 49th and Main, to direct patrons to the most convenient parking location. The UMB Bank parking garage will be open to Library patrons starting at 12:30 p.m. Proceeding directly to that location might provide a better parking experience for individuals arriving early.

The auditorium doors will open to the public at approximately 1:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to ensure they are seated prior to the 2 p.m. start time.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind you that persons who RSVP'd after November 28, 2011, may be seated in an overflow room where the event will be broadcast via closed-circuit television.
