The Color Purple is a coming-of-age drama based on the often-challenged novel by Alice Walker. Walker became the first Black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for this work. It tells the story of Celie, a young Black woman living in rural Georgia in the early 20th century who writes letters to God as she is dealing with domestic violence and abuse. Just two years after publication, the novel was banned in schools across the country and has been challenged ever since.
