Philip Miller has been called the “Godfather” of the Kansas City poetry scene. Now residing in rural Pennsylvania, he returns to Kansas City for the formal launch of his sixth book of poetry, The Casablanca Fan, on Sunday, December 28, at 2 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Miller is the author of five previous collections of poetry including Cats in the House, Hard Freeze, From the Temperate Zone, and Branches Snapping, and Why We Love Our Cats & Dogs. He also co-edited the anthology Ghost of a Chance.

A 30-year veteran of the classroom, Miller has dedicated a lifetime to stirring up the love of all things poetic in others. He was founder of The Riverfront Reading Series and a founding board member of The Writers Place, and has edited several regional magazines including The Same and River King Literary Review.

“From our Man of Letters, Kansas City’s poker-faced showman and inquisitor of shadows and dreams, comes work ranging from narrative epiphany to contemplation of the most unwelcome of moments,” writes fellow poet David Ray. “His vision is unswerving, his anxiety level high, his offerings generous.”

Miller’s talk is co-sponsored by Prospero’s Books and Spartan Press. Copies of The Casablanca Fan will be available for sale, and the author will sign copies purchased at the event.
