Whenever Book Club: Read, Share, or Discuss On Your Time

If you love talking about books but aren’t quite ready to commit to joining a traditional book group, or if your schedule makes it hard to attend a regular gathering, we’ve got a convenient way for you to connect with other like-minded bibliophiles.

The Whenever Book Club is an online community of readers discussing books and sharing their reading experiences – no video needed, no set meeting times, no in-person obligations!

Using message boards and conversation threads (sort of like Reddit), a moderator provides prompts and leads the digital discussions. Read the selected book at your own pace, then take part whenever it’s easiest for YOU.

Pop in to the Whenever Book Club online, anytime, with no face time required. Whether it’s a quick visit while on your phone waiting in line at the DMV, or sitting at your laptop exploring ongoing chats about the latest title, this virtual community offers opportunities to connect with other readers or simply enjoy reading and discovering more about the book selection.

The WBC’s current pick is The Book Woman's Daughter by Kim Michele Richardson; online conversations run through the end of February.  Join the conversation!

How the Whenever Book Club works:

  • A featured book is selected every two to three months by participant vote, and online discussions take place throughout that period. Titles can be either fiction or nonfiction.

  • All club activities are entirely online, with no set times to join.

  • Participation is free for everyone with a Kansas City Public Library card. Don't have a card? Get one here. When you sign up for the Whenever Book Club, you’ll set up a profile and password.

  • Readers will have access to the title’s eBook edition through an app called Freading. The Library also strives to make copies of book club selections available in print, plus eBook and digital audiobook editions in other apps like hoopla or Libby – free with your library card.

  • The book club’s moderator manages the online forum where discussions occur. The moderator poses questions, shares relevant articles, and facilitates conversation about topics in the book. Members are encouraged to post and share. This format allows for ongoing conversation and makes it easy for readers to connect with each other through the forum.

Even if you aren’t reading the current selection, there are ways to stay engaged with other readers. Visit the Biblio Chats page, and explore ongoing discussions inspired by prompts like “Who’s your go-to author?” “What book would you like to see adapted as a film?” or “What’s the most intimidating book you’ve ever read?” There are also quizzes, reading challenges, and other conversation threads to take part in.
