Connections to Make? The Library Has a Place for That

Tuesday, October 27, 2020

Computer and internet access isn’t a mere convenience in these pandemic-afflicted times. It’s a lifeline, and the Library continues to expand availability.

Patrons now can reserve private or distanced work areas – computer-equipped Community Connections Rooms and wireless-connected Study Spots – in select Library locations where they can safely engage in such essential activities as job interviews, telehealth visits, and study sessions. Or they can simply catch up with family or friends.

The new offerings join a modest but growing menu of in-person, appointment-only services inside Library locations. You can get an overview here. You also can find the latest offerings at all neighborhood Library locations by visiting their information pages.

All services are free to anyone with a Library card.

Community Connections Rooms are available at the L.H. Bluford and Southeast branches. Study Spots can be reserved at the Irene H. Ruiz and Waldo locations. Patrons in each case are limited to a single session a day, and masks and social distancing are required to maintain safety.

Using Community Connections Rooms

Make important face-to-face connections – for interviews, telehealth consultations, group study sessions, and many other virtual engagements – in a room to yourself. You also can consult virtually with a member of the Library’s Community Reference staff.

A webcam-enabled computer is available for use with a Library card for the duration of your appointment. Session lengths depend on individual need. For safety, only one person is allowed in a room at a time.

Free printing is available, as well as free photo copying, fax services, and scanning.

Call 816.701.3400 or visit the Bluford or Southeast location to reserve a time. Advance reservations are required.

Using Study Spots

At designated, distanced tables in the Ruiz and Waldo locations, you can connect your own device to Wi-Fi for study, work, one-on-one tutoring, or collaboration on projects with a colleague. No more than two people to a table, please. Sessions are limited to one hour.

Make a reservation online, by calling 816.701.3400, or visiting the participating location of your choice. You’ll need your Library card number to connect to Wi-Fi.

Again, free printing, photo copying, fax, and scanning services are available.
