It’s one of the most important decisions we make when it comes to our kids: where they will go to school. In some cities and towns, it’s all about the neighborhood. In smaller communities, there might be a single school for all the kids to attend. Here in Kansas City, there are dozens of options for families and caregivers, and let’s face it, they can be overwhelming. That’s why Show Me KC Schools, the Office of the Mayor Sly James, and the Kansas City Public Library are co-sponsoring the City School Fair.
The Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., will host the free fair Saturday, November 11 beginning at 10 am. Here’s why you should check it out.
Number of schools. Kansas City has a lot of schools. A LOT. “If you are a kindergartner living in the KCPS boundaries, you have more than 30 school options,” said Show Me KC Schools Director Tricia Johnson. “But the City School Fair serves as one-stop shopping for your family. It’s the only fair in Kansas City that will have public, charter, private, and parochial schools in attendance.” Fifty-five schools will be in attendance.
Hear from people who were once in your shoes. Not only will you be able to have one-on-one conversations with school administrators, you can also talk to current school families. This means no spin, and genuine feedback from parents who, not so long ago, were as overwhelmed as you might be. Wendy Pearson, who attended last year’s fair, said school websites only took her family so far. “Being able to actually connect with people in person was extremely valuable,” said Pearson. “It gave us the opportunity to talk about specific things important to our family.”
The event is kid-friendly. Stone Lion Puppet Theatre will perform at 11 am. There will also be balloon artists, face painters, musicians from local high schools and more.
It’s time we stop overlooking Kansas City Schools For years families have moved out of the city once their little ones were school age, worried about the quality of education. That’s no longer the case. From tuition-free Montessori options to dual language and language immersion schools to project-based learning schools, there is something in KC for every young student. “It’s important to know that we have many great schools in Kansas City and they are all unique,” said Johnson. “Before you put your house on the market, come to the City School Fair, talk with principals, current parents and students.”
