One year ago, voters overwhelmingly approved an 8-cent increase in the Library’s property tax-based operating levy – the first adjustment to the rate in 22 years. Thanks to that support and funding, the Library has been doing even more for the people we serve. As we broaden our services and respond to growing community needs, we want to keep you informed about our progress in what we call the Library’s Next Chapter. Learn what's happening at your neighborhood Library location, discover new or expanded services, and see how we’re working to improve patron experiences.

It would be kind of retro-cool to bill the Library’s new outreach vehicle as its first bookmobile in more than half a century.  Except it’s more than a bookmobile. The customized, brightly emblazoned cargo van hit the streets Thursday, September 17, 2020, ferrying bags of books, audiobooks, and DVDs to residents of area senior living centers as part of the Library’s Lobby Stops program. It will be a frequent presence at other outreach events and activities, transporting displays, supplies, and other materials and serving as a pop-up gathering place. Equipped with Wi-Fi, it’ll also eventually provide patrons who need it with essential internet access.

The Library’s North-East location plans to reopen fairly quietly Thursday, December 17, 2020. There’ll be no splashy ceremony. Plans are to hold a public celebration sometime after the first of the year, as soon as it's safe, formally unveiling an extensively remodeled facility that reflects the rich diversity of its neighborhood. But we’ll say this up front: The Library, and Kansas City’s Historic Northeast, have a new jewel.
