Juneteenth marks the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans on June 19, 1865, following the end of the Civil War. This milestone in America's history came to be known as Juneteenth — combining "June" and "Nineteenth" — and is observed annually. In commemoration of the holiday, the Library offers a number of book recommendations, films, and other resources that highlight the history of Black experiences in America.

Just in time for 2021's Juneteenth, Congress passed long-discussed legislation making the date a federal holiday — the 12th in U.S. history. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law on June 17. In celebration of the newly official holiday, the Library offers a number of book recommendations, films, and a special event that highlight the history of the Black experience in America.
“This is really about the community,” said U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo during her April 14 visit to the Library. "It’s not about one person standing up here. This is all of us coming together.” For the past two months, Kansas Citians engaged in Big Read 2022 book discussions, speaker events, film screenings, and other activities revolving around Harjo's An American Sunrise. As the celebration draws to a close, we look back on memorable moments.
The world is changing – in so many ways – amid a COVID-19 pandemic that has seen everything from schools to restaurants close as governors across the country issue shelter-in-place orders, requiring residents to stay at home unless travel is absolutely necessary. The Kansas City Public Library has had to adapt, too. Congress established Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in 1992, corresponding its timing in May to two historical milestones: the arrival of the nation’s first Japanese immigrants in May 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad, in which Chinese workers played a pivotal role, in May 1869. A presidential proclamation in 2021 expanded the observance to include Native Hawaiians. The Library pays tribute by offering a collection of books, events and activities, resources, and more that highlight AAPI voices and experiences.
