Movies and Memories: The Joys of Laughter

Humor, personified by the blundering but likable Mr. Bean, is the focus of the latest installment of the special, intergenerational movie series for individuals with dementia, their friends, and families.

The Library screens several clips from the British TV series featuring Rowan Atkinson’s iconic everyman character. He tries his hand at miniature golf. He navigates the laundry mat. And a restaurant. Life is a challenge for Bean, whose endearing awkwardness turns the most ordinary situations into moments of hilarity.

The afternoon also features laughter yoga, a new form of exercise akin to internal jogging that promotes the use of laughter as a form of physical exercise. Richelle Basgall provides live music – fiddle, “frog,” and vocals. There’s popcorn for all, and everyone leaves with a treat.

Co-sponsored by Kansas City FilmFest, the Heart of America Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, The Creativity Connection and The Kansas City Star.
